Someone is RUNNING AWAY

what YOU can do

Give them their space; if they are older allow them to decompress in a safe place, if they are younger give them enough space but maintain supervision.

If they have run away and are missing, check the places they may potentially be and/or call the people they may be with.

Let them know you are there for them - that your priority is to keep them safe.

If you know their location, pick them up. It is the parent's responsibility unless the youth is resisting, at which point it is appropriate to call 9-1-1for help.

WHO can help

Tumbleweed is a dynamic community model program that empowers at-risk youth, families and their support systems through advocacy, education and individualized service.

Child Protective Services or Youth Court may also be appropriate resources if the individual running away is affiliated with said organizations.

Medical or Emergency Care

A clinic or emergency healthcare provider is able to evaluate and determine the appropriate level of care. The patient will go through a medical screening process so medical providers can determine the best treatment based on the patient’s needs. This may include referral to a mental health professional or hospitalization.
